Research from a school network

School seismometers are real research instruments — their data flows into AusPass and turns up in the literature.

How these numbers are made

No snapshot. Unlike the other tracker pages, nothing here is committed to the repository — every figure is fetched from the network’s own services the moment you load the page.

Station registry. The AusPass FDSN station service (network S1, pipe-delimited text) lists every AuSIS station: coordinates, school name, start and end dates. A station is active when its EndTime is empty; its since year is the StartTime year. Re-queried on every page load.

Streaming status. The AuScope Outreach platform probes each station’s live data feed hourly and publishes the result as ausis_status.json. The banner and the “Streaming right now” tile show that feed’s checked timestamp.

States. The registry carries no state field, so states are derived from each station’s latitude/longitude with simple bounding rules (ACT is carved out of NSW; the QLD–NSW coastal border is approximated). A school sitting very close to a border could be assigned to its neighbour.

Coastline. Natural Earth 1:110m (public domain), simplified to two rings (mainland + Tasmania) in australia-outline.json. It is decoration — the dots are positioned purely by the registry’s own coordinates.
